Public Works
Richard Woody, Senior Landfill Inspector Phone: (804) 492-3800, ext 1117 General InformationThe Department of Public Works operates three citizen convenience centers to receive household trash and recyclable materials from households in Cumberland County (click here for a map of all three centers).
These centers are for citizens bringing trash and recyclables originating from their residence. All of these centers are staffed full-time to assist any citizen who needs help. Requirements for UseThe Cumberland Convenience Centers are strictly for residential use. A valid Cumberland County personal property decal on the windshield of the vehicle or a valid driver's license is considered proof that the customer is a resident. Commercial usage of the public use areas is a violation of the County Code and the Virginia Department Environmental Quality (DEQ) Solid Waste Management Regulations. Hours of OperationMonday and Tuesday - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fees for UsageThere is no cost to Cumberland residents for normal residential trash disposal or recycling. Fees do apply for tire disposal (see below). Materials Accepted for DisposalWe accept solid waste generated from homes of Cumberland County residents. This material is to be placed directly in the refuse containers. Items Not AcceptedTo protect the health and safety of employees
and our customers and also protect the environment, there are certain
items that we cannot accept: RecyclingDue to the advent of individually packaged products intended for a single use such as water bottles, soda cans and snacks, we have exponentially grown our rate of trash production. These products are convenient for a population on the go, but they are also filling our landfills faster than ever. Recycling is an easy, common-sense way to divert many of the materials from the landfill, while also saving energy, money and slowing down our natural resource consumption. The county provides bins at each convenience center that allows the citizens of Cumberland the opportunity to recycle various items such as metal, plastic and paper. Please visit the Cumberland Recycling Task Force web page for additional information. Special ItemsTires Tires can be brought to the Madison District
Convenience Center only. See the fee schedule below for tire disposal.
Appliances Appliances that do NOT have a compressor (washers, dryers, stoves, hot water heaters, microwaves, and dishwashers) can be brought to any convenience center. Appliances with compressors (refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners) can only be brought to the Madison District Transfer Station. Paint Only paint cans that are empty or containing dried paint can be brought to the convenience centers. Water based (latex) paint can be dried by leaving the lid off or absorbing the wet paint with kitty litter. |
