Cumberland Recycling Task Force

Mission Statement

To help promote a healthy environment by encouraging Cumberland citizens to reduce, reuse, and recycle .

General Information

The Cumberland Recycling Taskforce Committee was created in July 2008. The purpose of the Committee is to advise the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors on aspects of the County's current and future recycling programs. The Committee works closely with the Planning and Zoning Administrator and Public Works in recommending to the Board any changes needed to maintain the Recycling Program's efforts and consistency with the County's Comprehensive Plan. The Committee also promotes the Recycling Program, in cooperation with the Board, by providing educational materials to the public and conducting informational meetings.

Why is Recycling Important to Cumberland County?

Due to the advent of individually packaged products intended for a single use such as water bottles, soda cans and snacks, we have exponentially grown our rate of trash production. These products are convenient for a population on the go, but they are also filling our landfills faster than ever. Recycling is an easy, common-sense way to divert many of the materials from the landfill, while also saving energy, money and slowing down our natural resource consumption.

How do I Recycle in Cumberland County?

The County operates three Convenience Centers that accepts certain materials for recycling. These facilities are open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. (except on certain holidays). There is no charge for residents.

Materials that we recycle:
Cardboard - Includes cereal boxes, packaging boxes, milk and juice containers
Paper - Newspapers, magazines, notebook paper and many other paper products
Glass - Food jars and bottles.
Metals - Aluminum cans and foil, tin cans, flat scrap metal and lawnmowers without engines
Appliances - Washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, microwaves and dishwashers
(Note: appliances with compressors (refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners can be taken to Madison District Station ONLY)

What Happens to the Items I Recycle?

You may be wondering where the materials go from the convenience centers. Most of the material collected goes to STEPS in Farmville where it is sorted and shipped to various places for recycling. STEPS is a non-profit organization that provides job training and employment opportunities for people who have physical, mental, or economic difficulties and live in the local area.
