Cumberland County Recognized by the Virginia Association of Counties

Cumberland, VA  (August 5, 2022) Cumberland County has been selected as a 2022 Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) Achievement Award Winner for its “Cumberland County Unified Fire and EMS System.  The VACo Awards recognize excellence in local government programs.  This year’s slate of nominations included 100 submissions.  Other localities honored this year included Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, Loudoun, Pulaski, Rappahannock Richmond, Stafford, Sussex, Wythe, and Prince William Counties, placing Cumberland in great company among its peers.

Cumberland’s Unified Fire and EMS System Program included highlights related to operating Fire and EMS services in a small, rural locality.   Public safety and the protection of life and property is one of the most significant pressures absorbed by a small, rural, or developing locality. Cumberland County’s efforts to unite its volunteer fire departments, along with paid contracted EMS staff, managed by a County paid professional Fire and EMS Chief is a model that can positively serve other small, rural localities in the Commonwealth.

“This is the recognition of a positive outcome of Cumberland County’s collective commitment to public safety on behalf of its citizens.  It takes a full team approach to meet the County’s needs, through fire department volunteerism, contracted staff, the Fire Chief, and through the support of the Board of Supervisors,” said Board Chairman Brian Stanley.

“I want to thank all who participated in the 20th year of the Achievement Awards,” VACo Executive Director Dean Lynch said. “This is an anniversary year, and I was encouraged to see that we had 100 submissions, our third-highest total ever. This tells me that the VACo Achievement Awards program’s mission of identifying and celebrating the innovative work by local government officials continues to resonate with our counties. We thank all who participated and recognize those who won an award.”

The VACo Achievement Awards is a competitive program open to local government members of the association.
