Refuse
The Department of Public Works operates three citizen convenience centers to receive household trash and recyclable materials from households in Cumberland County. The convenience centers are strictly for residential use. A valid driver's license is considered proof that the customer is a resident. Commercial usage of the public use areas is a violation of the County Code and the Virginia Department Environmental Quality (DEQ) Solid Waste Management Regulations.

Items Not Accepted
To protect the health and safety of employees and our customers and also protect the environment, there are certain items that we cannot accept:
- Automotive or other lead acid batteries (may be recycled at retailers that sell automotive batteries)
- Explosives or ammunition
- Hazardous items
- Hot ashes or cinders
- Oil based paint, gasoline and thinners
- Oxygen, propane tanks or other pressurized tanks
- Pesticides or other farm chemicals
- Used oil (may be recycled at retailers that sell motor oil)
- Lawn clippings, Brush or Tree Debris of any kind
Recycling
Due to the advent of individually packaged products intended for a single use such as water bottles, soda cans and snacks, we have exponentially grown our rate of trash production. These products are convenient for a population on the go, but they are also filling our landfills faster than ever. Recycling is an easy, common-sense way to divert many of the materials from the landfill, while also saving energy, money and slowing down our natural resource consumption. The county provides bins at each convenience center that allows the citizens of Cumberland the opportunity to recycle various items such as metal, plastic and paper.
